By Francisco Salazar

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced a cast change for its production of “Carmen.”

The company said, “Michael Spyres will take on the role of Don José in the opera ‘Carmen,’ replacing Charles Castronovo, who due to scheduling problems is finally unable to participate in the production.”

This season Spyres is set to perform “Der fliegende Holländer” at Staatsoper Hamburg as well as “Lohengrin” in France. He is also set to perform “La Vestale” at the Paris Opera.

The tenor is set to join a cast that includes Simon Orfila, Clémentine Margaine, and Adriana González. Josep Pons conducts the production by Calixto Bieito.

“Carmen” opens on Jan. 4 and runs through Jan. 17, 2023.
