By Francisco Salazar

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced a cast for its production of Verdi’s “Macbeth.”

The company said that barítone Željko Lučić will sing the title role replacing Carlos Álvarez, who is ill.

Lučić is well-known for his interpretation of the title role, which he has performed to acclaim at the Salzburg Festival and the Metropolitan Opera. His interpretation has also been featured on two HD recordings from the Met with Maria Guleghina and Anna Netrebko.

The baritone joins the second cast, which will feature Ekaterina Semenchuk and Alexandrina Pendatchanska sharing the title role, as well as Simón Orfila and Celso Albelo. Jaume Plensa directs the production, while Josep Pons conducts.

“Macbeth” opens on Feb. 16 with a first cast starring Luca Salsi, Sondra Radvanovsky, and Erwin Schrott.
