The Royal Opera in London is set to present the world premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s “Festen” this February.

The work features a libretto by Lee Hall based on Vinterberg’s revolutionary Dogme 95 film of the same name. The story explores a family reunion gone wrong when secrets expose an abusive relationship between the patriarch and his children.

The opera will be directed by Richard Jones and stars Gerald Finley, Allan Clayton, Stéphane Debout, Natalya Romaniw, Rose Aldridge, Thomas Oliemans, Susan Bickley, Philippa Boyle, Peter Brathwaite, Marta Fontanals-Simmons, Aled Hall, Julian Hubbard, Clare Presland, John Tomlison, Ailish Tynan, Kitty Whately, and Jeremy White. Edward Gardner conducts.

“It means an enormous amount to me to write a new opera for The Royal Opera. I had such a great experience working on Anna Nicole that I jumped at the chance of writing another; The Royal Opera has been so loyal to me, really backing Lee Hall and I from the start. The original film by Thomas Vinterberg really draws you in from the first minute of action and the heart-breaking story about denial is, unfortunately, more relevant today than ever. Audiences can expect 90 minutes of high drama, lyricism and some dark humour along the way,” Turnage said in an official press release.

This opera is the latest commission by The Royal Opera, following “Innocence,” “Last Days,” and “The Blue Woman.”

“Festen” opens on Feb. 11 and runs through the 27th. It is presented in co-production with the Finnish National Opera & Ballet and has a duration of 90 minutes with no intermission.
