By Francisco Salazar

The Dutch National Opera is set to present Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra.”

The company will present the opera as part of the Holland Festival and Fabio Luisi will conduct the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Jetske Mijnssen will direct the new production.

The new production by Mijnssen sets Verdi’s opera in 1881, the year the revised version premiered and when Italy was united yet still marked by deep social and regional divisions.

The cast will include George Petean, previously seen at Dutch National Opera in Verdi’s “Nabucco” and “La traviata,” Federica Lombardi, who previously performed Verdi’s Messa da requiem in Amsterdam, Joshua Guerrero, known in Amsterdam for Puccini’s “Tosca” and “Il trittico,” Georg Zeppenfeld.

“Simon Boccanegra” open on June 4 and run through June 28. The opera will be screened as Opera in the Park on a large screen in Amsterdam’s Park Frankendael.
