Fresh Squeezed Opera to Present ‘Self Defined Circuits’

By Francisco Salazar

This spring the Fresh Squeezed Opera will be premiering its new opera, “Self Defined Circuits.”

The production, which will open in May, will be performed at the Dorothy B. Williams Theater located at the HERE Performing Arts Center.

The opera is composed by FSO’s founder Jillian Flexner and libretto by Orlando Segarra and explores two main questions, what does self-identity and femininity mean to artificial intelligence; and how can someone grow if trapped in someone else’s world?

Flexner noted, “I was in an abusive relationship when I was forming ideas about gender, sexuality, and self-identity. The most invasive and damaging thing he ever did was to define these for me. For a very long time, I lived trapped within his definitions of who I was and what I meant to the world. I want this opera to reflect this abuse: that defining a person is just as damaging as any other type of harm.”

“Self Defined Circuits” premieres on May 3 with performances on May 5, 6, and 7.
