Festival Internacional de Santander to Present ‘The Magic Flute’ in 2026

By Francisco Salazar

Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” is set to open the 75th Festival Internacional de Santander in 2026.

The opera will be performed two times during the festival and David Afkham will conduct the production. The opera will also mark the return of staged operas to the festival. The return of staged opera is a project that has been in the works for two years.

Festival Director Cosme Marina said, “Paloma O’Shea firmly believed in an initiative of this magnitude, and her idea coincided with the Festival’s commitment to reintroducing staged opera into our programming. Both Foundations have found the support in public administrations to make this dream a reality and to coincide with the start of the 75th edition of the Festival.”

The plan to stage operas at the festival was first announced in 2024 and was supported by  the local governments of Santander and Cantabria in Spain.
