Felix Jarrar’s ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’ Set to World Premiere at Florida Grand Opera

By David Salazar

Composer Felix Jarrar‘s “The Pit and the Pendulum” will receive its world premiere on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Florida Grand Opera offices, presented as part of a trilogy of one-act operas by FGO’s Education programming.

The new work — Jarrar’s 15th opera and his fifth adaptation of a tale by Edgar Allan Poe — features Studio Artist baritone Alexander Granito as the Prisoner and CANTO artist mezzo-soprano Jade Espina as the Inquisitor. Jarrar himself will music direct from the piano. The evening’s program is rounded out by Debussy’s “L’enfant prodigue” and Mozart’s “The Impresario,” the latter of which Jarrar will also conduct.

The opera continues Jarrar’s ongoing engagement with Poe’s literary universe, following earlier adaptations of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Oval Portrait,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.”

The performance is for invited guests only.

A New York City premiere is planned for the summer as part of a Jarrar & Goodwin showcase concert with collaborator Bea Goodwin. Mezzo-soprano Eugenia Forteza is set to take on the role of the Inquisitor for that production. Further details are forthcoming.
