Experiments in Opera Announces World Premiere of ‘Constance: A Confession’
By David SalazarExperiments in Opera (EiO) will present the world premiere of “Constance: A Confession” from May 13–22 at HERE Arts Center in New York City.
The work was developed through EiO’s Writers’ Room, the company’s collaborative multi-author initiative now in its fourth iteration. Librettists Sam Norman, Susan Bywaters, Lisa Clair, and Ed Valentine partnered with composers Elizabeth Gartman, Roger A. Martinez, Jasmine Galante, and Mattie Levy, with each pairing responsible for one of the opera’s four acts.
The 75-minute work follows Constance, a charismatic con artist whose schemes escalate from a graduate school art class to a career as a psychic, wellness influencer, and ultimately the leader of a deadly cult.
Soprano Sydney E. Anderson leads the cast as Constance, with baritone Nathaniel Sullivan, mezzo-soprano Sishel Claverie, and soprano Zen Wu rounding out the principal ensemble. Shannon Sindelar directs, with Dmitry Glivinskiy serving as music director. The chamber ensemble Hypercube will perform alongside the cast.
Founded in Brooklyn in 2011, EiO has commissioned 99 new works from 67 composers and 34 librettists over its 15-year history.
