The Wiener Staatsoper has named bass-baritone Erwin Schrott as Kammersänger.

The award was given to Schrott at the end of a performance of “Tosca” on Dec. 2, 2022.

In a statement, Schrott said, “I would like to thank State Opera Director Dr. Bogdan Rošcic, the head of the section Mr. Mag. Jürgen Meindl as a representative of the Ministry of Culture, the audience, and Austria for the award of the honorary title of Kammersänger at the Vienna State Opera.”

He added, “Receiving the most prestigious title in the highest art form that combines all of the elements, words, music, drama and dance, goes beyond any possible words.”

Schrott has performed at the Royal Opera, Deustche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Hamburg, Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Metropolitan Opera.
