English National Opera Announces Socially Distanced Performances

By Francisco Salazar

The English National Opera has announced it is planning a socially distanced season of “stripped-back” productions, with every other row empty and audiences spaced with a two-seat gap between them.

Chief executive Stuart Murphy told the Stage that “reducing social distancing to 1-metre meant the venue could operate at about 48% capacity.” The reduction will require smaller productions on stage.

The new regulations will also force audience members to wear masks and gloves for the duration of their visit to the London Coliseum. Audience members will also be asked to arrive at staggered times through an increased number of entrances.

Murphy added that a socially distanced opera festival will cut down the number of singers and musicians to ensure safe working environments and cut costs.

He also noted that the previously announced production of “Hairspray” will be pushed back.

The ENO plans to restart performances outside the Coliseum, and will launch a drive-in opera program. The company has yet to announce a 2020-21 season.
