Elizabeth Caballero, Yolanda Auyanet, Atalla Ayan, Catherine Naglestad & Martin Muehle Lead Staatsoper Stuttgart’s 2021-22 Season

The Staatsoper Stuttgart has announced its 2021-22 season.

Here is a look at the operatic and vocal performances.

Opera

Premieres

Paul Dessau’s “Die Verurteilung des Lukullus” opens the season. The complex work stars Friedemann Röhlig, Alina Adamski, Torsten Hofmann, Elliott Carlton Hines, Maria Theresa Ullrich, Linsey Coppens, Philipp Nicklaus, Heinz Göhrig, Jasper Leever, Laia Vallés, Clare Tunney, and Gerhard Siegel in the title role. Bernhard Kontarsky conducts a production by Franziska Kronfoth and Julia Lwowski.

Performance dates: Nov. 1 – 20, 2021

Wagner‘s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” starts in the 2021-22 season at the Staatsoper Stuttgart. “Das Rheingold” will spotlight Goran Jurić, Paweł Konik, Matthias Klink, Leigh Melrose, Elmar Gilbertsson, David Steffens, Adam Palka, Rachael Wilson, Esther Dierkes, Stine Marie Fischer, Ida Ränzlöv, and Aytaj Shikhalizade. Cornelius Meister conducts a production by Stephan Kimmig.

Performance dates: Nov. 21 – Dec. 19, 2021

Antonio Vivaldi’s “Juditha Triumphans” showcases Stine Marie Fischer, Diana Haller, Gaia Petrone, Alexandra Urquiola, and Rachael Wilson in the title role. Silvia Costa is the director.

Performance dates: Jan. 16 – March 12, 2022

Josefin Feiler and Ida Ränzlöv star in the title roles in Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel.” Rosie Aldridge, Shigeo Ishino, Catriona Smith, and Claudia Muschio round out the cast with Alevtina Ioffe conducting a production by Axel Ranisch.

Performance dates: Feb. 6 – April 3, 2022

Okka von der Damerau debuts in the role of Brünnhilde, Michael König sings Siegmund, and Brian Mulligan performs Wotan in “Die Walküre.” The cast also includes Simone Schneider, Goran Jurić, Anika Schlicht, Clare Tunney, Esther Dierkes, Catriona Smith, Linsey Coppens, Maria Theresa Ullrich, and Stine Marie Fischer. Cornelius Meister conducts.

Performance dates: April 10 – May 2, 2022

David Junghoon Kim interprets the Prince, and Esther Dierkes stars in the title role in Bastian Kraft’s production of Antonín Dvořák’s “Rusalka.” Goran Jurić, Katia Ledoux, Torsten Hofmann, and Alexandra Urquiola round out the cast with Oksana Lyniv conducting.

Performance dates: June 4 – July 2, 2022

Robert Schumann’s “Szenen aus Goethes ‘Faust’” will showcase Josefin Feiler, Stine Marie Fischer, Kai Kluge, and Jarrett Ott in the title role. André de Ridder conducts a production by Marco Štorman.

Revivals

Ivan Magrì sings Mario Cavaradossi, Lucio Galo performs Scarpia, and Catherine Naglestad stars in the title role in Puccini‘s “Tosca.” Jasper Leever, Andrew Bogard, and Heinz Göhrig round out the cast with Giuliano Carella and Killian Farrell conducting a production by Willy Decker.

Performance dates: Sep. 18, 2021 – Feb. 19, 2022

Kai Kluge, Charles Sy, and Mingjie Lei portray Tamino; Josefin Feiler and Carina Schmieger perform Pamina; and Goran Jurić, Gerard Farreras, and David Steffens sing Sarastro in Barrie Kosky’s production of Mozart‘s “Die Zauberflöte.” Alina Adamski, Beate Ritter, Catriona Smith, Clare Tunney, Maria Theresa Ullrich, Linsey Coppens, Stine Marie Fischer, Alexandra Urquiola, Björn Bürger, Johannes Kammler, Michael Nagl, Laia Vallés, and Torsten Hofmann round out the cast with Karsten Januschke and Vlad Iftinca conducting.

Atalla Ayan appears as Pinkerton, and Elizabeth Caballero stars in the title role of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly.” The cast also includes Maria Theresa Ullrich, Jarrett Ott, Torsten Hofmann, and Gerard Farreras. Valerio Galli conducts a production by Monique Wagemakers.

Performance dates: Oct. 2 – 24, 2021

A concert version of Richard Strauss‘ “Der Rosenkavalier” spotlights Simone Schneider, David Steffens, Diana Haller, Paweł Konik, Beate Ritter, Torsten Hofmann, Carole Wilson, Heinz Göhrig, and Mingjie Lei. Cornelius Meister conducts.

Performance dates: Oct. 3 – Nov. 7, 2021

Johann Strauss‘ “Die Fledermaus” spotlights Matthias Klink, Ida Ränzlöv, Kai Kluge, Björn Bürger, Torsten Hofmann, Maria Nazarova, and Beate Ritter. Cornelius Meister conducts a production by Philipp Stölzl.

Performance dates: Dec. 15, 2021 – Jan. 11, 2022

Prokofiev’s “Die Liebe zu Drei Orangen” features Goran Jurić, Kai Kluge, Elmar Gilbertsson, Helene Schneiderman, Shigeo Ishino, Daniel Kluge, Dominic Große, Michael Ebbecke, Svetlana Sozdateleva, Linsey Coppens, Fiorella Hincapié, Carina Schmieger, and Matthew Anchel. Killian Farrell conducts a production by Axel Ranisch.

Performance dates: Jan. 8 – Feb. 12, 2022

Mussorgsky‘s “Boris Godunov” stars Alexandra Urquiola, Carina Schmieger, Maria Theresa Ullrich, Štefan Margita, David Steffens, Elmar Gilbertsson, Friedemann Röhlig, Stine Marie Fischer, Petr Nekoranec, and Adam Palka in the title role. Titus Engel conducts a production by Paul-Georg Dittrich.

Performance dates: March 5 – 30, 2022

Amanda Woodbury sings Donna Anna, Diana Haller portrays Donna Elvira, Michael Nagl performs Leporello, and Johannes Kammler stars in the title role in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.” Mingjie Lei, David Steffens, Claudia Muschio and Jasper Leever round out the cast with Marie Jacquot conducting a production by Andrea Moses.

Performance dates: March 19 – April 1, 2022

Jean-Philippe Rameau’s “Platée” features Moritz Kallenberg, Elliott Carlton Hines, Shigeo Ishino, Beate Ritter, Paweł Konik, Maria Theresa Ullrich, Laia Vallés, and Marcel Beekman in the title role. Stefano Montanari conducts a production by Calixto Bieito.

Performance dates: April 16 – May 27, 2022

Händel‘s “Alcina” spotlights Ida Ränzlöv, Claudia Muschio, Alexandra Urquiola, Moritz Kallenberg, Andrew Bogard, and Carina Schmieger with Christopher Moulds conducting a production by Jossi Wieler.

Performance dates: April 24 – May 28, 2022

Martin Muehle sings Pollione, Goran Jurić performs Oroveso, Diana Haller portrays Adalgisa, and Yolanda Auyanet stars in the title role in Jossi Wieler’s production of Bellini‘s “Norma.” Friedrich Haider conducts.

Performance dates: April 27 – May 24, 2022

Charles Sy and Alberto Robert interpret Count Almaviva; Johannes Kammler and Jarrett Ott portray Figaro; and Linsey Coppens and Diana Haller appear as Rosina in Rossini‘s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia.” The cast also includes Giulio Mastrototaro, Michael Nagl, Jorge Ruvalcaba, Clare Tunney, and Catriona Smith with Vlad Iftinca conducting a production by Beat Fäh.

Performance dates: May 26 – July 3, 2022

Rachael Wilson appears as Charlotte, while Atalla Ayan stars in the title role in Massenet‘s “Werther.” Paweł Konik, Shigeo Ishino, and Aoife Gibney round out the cast with Marc Piollet conducting a production by Felix Rothenhäusler.

Performance dates: June 12 – 23, 2022

Björn Bürger portrays Count Almaviva; Amanda Woodbury sings Countess Almaviva; and Claudia Muschio takes on Susanna in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro.” The cast also includes Diana Haller, Maria Theresa Ullrich, Shigeo Ishino, Heinz Göhrig, Alberto Robert, and Laia Vallés. Cornelius Meister conducts a production by Christiane Pohle.

Sebastian Schwab’s “Holle!” features Maria Theresa Ullrich and Adam Ambarzumjan with Sebastian Schwab conducting a production by Suse Pfister.

Glass’ “Les Enfants Terribles” showcases Laia Vallés, Deborah Saffery, Elliott Carlton Hines, and Moritz Kallenberg with Sebastian Schwab conducting a production by Corinna Tetzel.

Clare Tunney stars in “Melusine.” Thorsten Cölle is the director.

Mozart’s “Der Schauspieldirektor” stars Gerard Farreras, Jorge Ruvalcaba, Linsey Coppens, Clare Tunney, Ángel Macías, Laia Vallés, and Sebastian Schäfer in the title role. Elena Tzavara conducts a production by Elisabeth Vogetseder.

Concerts

Alto Stine Marie Fischer and a soloist soprano yet to be announced present Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 alongside conductor Cornelius Meister.

Soprano Carina Schmieger performs Georg Philipp Telemann’s Cantata for soprano and orchestra alongside pianist Alan Hamilton.
