By Francisco Salazar

Romanian soprano Elena Moșuc is set to make her role debut as Abigaille in Verdi’s “Nabucco.”

The soprano will sing the role at the ancient theatres of Siracusa, Tindari and Taormina. The first performance will be held on July 18 at the Teatro Greco di Siracusa follow by stops at the Teatro Greco di Tindari on August 4 and the Teatro Antico di Taormina on August 7.

The opera returns to Sicily after nearly 50 years and will also star Badral Chuluumbaatar (Nabucco), Enea Scala(Ismaele), Anna Pennisi (Fenena), and Khurelbaatar Oyunchimeg (Zaccaria). Maestro Salvador Vàzquez will conduct and Salvo Dolce will direct.

In a statement Moșuc said, “Making my debut as Abigaille is a challenge, but it is also the natural outcome of a journey through the Verdi repertoire and beyond. It is a Belcanto role in which dramatic intensity is expressed both through recitatives of great expressive power and through coloratura passages that require the momentum and brilliance of a true dramatic coloratura soprano.”

The role of Abigaille is the latest Verdi role that the Moșuc performs following Gilda in “Rigoletto,” Violetta in “La Traviata,” Medora in “Il Corsaro,” the title role in “Luisa Miller,” Leonora in “Il Trovatore,” Desdemona in “Otello,” Alice Ford in “Falstaff,” and Giselda in “I Lombardi alla prima crociata.”
