Dresden Philharmonic to Open with Rolf Gupta’s Oratorio
By Francisco SalazarThe Dresden Philharmonic is set to open its new season with Principal Guest Conductor Tabita Berglund conducting works by Antonín Dvořák, Béla Bartók, and Rolf Gupta.
The concuert with the theme “New Worlds” will feature soloist Truls Mørk in Dvořák’s Cello Concerto.
The concert will also include Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra and will conclude with Norwegian composer Rolf Gupta’s “Song of the Earth.”
Gupta’s piece is a large-scale oratorio for orchestra, choir, and soloists and is based on 3,000-year-old Indian texts, the Bible, and texts by Friedrich Schiller and Gustav Mahler.
For the composer himself, the work is “…a reflection on the wonder, longing, and joy of creation. It is also a warning: If we do not pause to listen to the song of the earth, we risk extinguishing our own lives and the fragile nature of which we are a part. Are we perhaps destroying ourselves because we fail to find answers?”
Performances will be held on August 29 and 30, 2025.
