Dimitri Platanias, Francesco Demuro, Anita Rachvelishvili, Anna Pirozzi Headline Greek National Opera’s 2022-23 Season

The Greek National Opera has announced its 2022-23 season. It will feature five revivals, one newly commissioned opera, and 10 new opera and ballet productions.

The season opens with a new production of Dimitra Trypani’s “Andrei: A Requiem in Eight Scenes.” The work will be conducted by Trypani and stars Iro Bezou, Irini Bilini-Moraiti, Thanasis Dovris, Valia Karagiorga, Giorgos Kasavetis, Marianna Kavallieratos, Dimitra Kokkinopoulou, Nandia Kontogeorgi, Hara Kotsali, Christina Maxouri, Giorgos Nikopoulos, Alexandros Psihramis, Kalliopi Simou, Fotis Siotas, Aliki Siousti, Christos Thanos, Savina Yannatou, Fanis Zachopoulos, and Nikos Ziaziaris.

The work was composed for celebrated filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.

Performance Dates: Sept. 25 – 28, 2022

Next up is a performance of Mikis Theodorakis’ “Symphony No. 2: The Song of the Earth.” The showcase will feature soloist Titos Gouvelis and the Children’s Chorus. Elias Voudouris conducts.

Performance Dates: Oct. 2, 2022

Next up is Theodorakis’ “March of the Spirit” and songs. Stathis Soulis conducts such soloists as Maria Farantouri, Tassos Apostolou, Thodoris Voutsikakis as well as the GNO Orchestra and Chorus.

Performance Dates: Oct. 5, 2022

“Don Giovanni” will be directed by John Fuljames and conducted by Ondrej Olos. The opera will star Dionysios Sourbis, Vassilis Kavayas, Petros Magoulas, Cellia Costea, Yanni Yannissis, and Nikos Kotenidis.

Performance Dates: Oct. 21 – 29, 2022 

Nicolas Vassiliou will conduct “The Magic Pillows” with Nicolas Maraziotis, Nikos Kotenidis, Dionisios Melogiannidis, Vangelis Maniatis, George Mattheakakis, Kostis Rassidakis, and Yannis Kavoura. Natasha Triantafylli directs.

“’The Magic Pillows is a story that shows us anew what stuff we are made of—courage and high spirits and zest for life. Stuff that sits, secret and eternal, deep inside us and can never be wiped out by the injustices of the world. Stuff that makes you gaze up at the sky and realize you are great, no matter how small! Such stuff as dreams are made of,” Triantafylli said in an official press statement.

Performance Dates: Nov. 11 – Dec. 1, 2022

Adam Smith, Yannis Christopoulos, Nicole Chevalier, Vassiliki Karayanni, Michèle Lozier, Marisia Papalexiou, Tassos Apostolou, Petros Magoulas, Christophoros Stamboglis, Yanni Yannissis, Christos Kechris, and Yannis Kalyvas headline “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.” Lukas Karytinos conducts and Krzysztof Warlikowski directs.

Performance Dates: Dec. 18, 2022 – Jan. 8, 2023 

Dimitri Platanias, Tassis Christoyannis, Vassilis Kavayas, Cellia Costea, and Anna Agathonos headline “Falstaff” in a new production by Stephen Langridge. Pier Giorgio Morandi conducts.  

Performance Dates: Jan. 26 – Feb. 10, 2023

Audiences will be able to check out a double bill of “Bluebeard’s Castle” and “Gianni Schicchi” as conducted by Vassilis Christopoulos. The former will be directed by Themelis Glynatsis and stars Tassos Apostolou and Violetta Lousta, while the latter stars Dionysios Sourbis and is directed by John Fuljames.

Performance Dates: March 9 – 24, 2023 

Francesco Demuro and Anita Rachvelishvili will headline “Werther,” which will be directed by Spyros Evangelatos and conducted by Jacques Lacombe.

Performance Dates: March 23 – April 4, 2023

There will be a concert in tribute to Mikis Theodorakis featuring the Pallini Music High School.

Performance Dates: March 30, 2023 

Anna Pirozzi stars in “Médée” as directed by David McVicar and conducted by Philippe Auguin.

Performance Dates: April 25 – May 14, 2023

Olivier Py will direct “Madama Butterfly” with Vassilis Christopoulos conducting. The opera stars Cellia Costea, Andrea Carè, Alisa Kolosova, Dionysios Sourbis, Diamanti Kristsotaki, Yannis Kaylyvas, Haris Andrianos, Petros Magoulas, and Petros Salatas.

Performance Dates: June 1 – 10, 2023

Offenbach’s “Le Voyage dans la Lune” will be directed by Laurent Pelly and conducted by Elias Voudouris.

Performance Dates: July 12 & 13, 2023

There will be a revival of “Nabucco” with Dimitri Platanias and Tassis Christoyannis in the title role. Paolo Carignani conducts and Leo Muscato directs.
