By Afton Wooten

On April 14-16 Deaf West Theatre and the LA Philharmonic will partner to present a semi-staged version of Beethoven’s “Fidelio” at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

This production marks Deaf West Theatre’s first opera performance and the first known performance of “Fidelio” with Deaf artists. This production was crafted specifically for both Deaf and hearing audiences.

There is a collaboration between Deaf actors and hearing singers. Deaf actors include Amelia Hensely, Josh Castille, Russell Harvard, and Indi Robinson. They will act their roles and express Beethoven’s music through American Sign Language. Hearing singers Ryan Speedo Green, Gabriella Reyes, Christiane Libor, and Ian Koziara.

Gustavo Dudamel will lead the LA Philharmonic not only for this performance but has plans to continue working alongside Deaf West Theatre to bring systemic change to the performing arts to make this art form more accessible. The partnership is currently working on new policies and procedures within the LA Philharmonic to enhance the experience for Deaf audiences and performers.
