Bass-baritone Davóne Tines was honored as Musical America’s 2022 Vocalist of the Year at the 61st annual Musical America Awards ceremony. The event was held virtually via Facebook Live on Dec. 5 at 4:00 p.m. ET.

The event also included special appearances by leading artists and previous award winners, such as composer John Adams, pianist Jonathan Biss, violinist Jennifer Koh, pipa virtuoso Wu Man, the Danish String Quartet, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, cellist David Finckel, pianist Wu Han, and composer Mason Bates.

Tines is an internationally recognized bass-baritone. He has appeared at De Nationale Opera, Finnish National Opera, Opéra National de Paris, LA Opera, San Francisco Opera, American Modern Opera Company, and Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, among others.

His projects include Recital No. 1: MASS, a program exploring the Mass woven through Western European, African American, and 21st-century traditions, and Concerto No. 1: SERMON, a program he created for voice and orchestra with arias by John Adams, Anthony Davis, Igee Dieudonné, and Tines himself.

Tines is scheduled to perform the title role in Anthony Davis’ “X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X” at the Michigan Opera Theatre in May 2022.
