The Metropolitan Opera is set to present the company premiere of Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov and librettist David Henry Hwang’s “Ainadamar.”

The opera will premiere on Oct. 15 and will be directed and choreographed by Brazilian Deborah Colker.

When OperaWire saw the production at the Detroit Opera, John Vandevert said, “The evening was realized through novel artistry on every front. A truly Gesamtkunstwerk realization.”

Sung in Spanish, the opera dramatizes the life and work of poet-playwright Federico García Lorca, whose socialist politics and homosexuality led to his violent assassination by Fascist forces at the start of the Spanish Civil War.

The opera will star mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack as Lorca, soprano Elena Villalón as Nuria, a student to whom Xirgu reminisces about her memories of Lorca, and flamenco singer Alfredo Tejada as Ramón Ruiz Alonso. Soprano Angel Blue and Gabriella Reyes share the role of Margarita Xirgu.

Peruvian conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads Golijov’s flamenco- and rumba-infused score.

The opera will be performed eight times through Nov. 9.

The performances of “Ainadamar” on Oct. 15, Oct. 22, and Nov. 6 will be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio on the SiriusXM app and streamed live on the Met’s website.
