Romanian conductor Cristian Măcelaru has extended his contract as chief conductor of the WDR Sinfonieorchester until July 2025.

The extension was signed on Friday, June 26, 2020.

“Already at his inaugural concert in September 2019, he won over the hearts of the audience in an expressive manner. Appreciated by the media and specialist criticism, Cristian Măcelaru is an innovative motor for our orchestra and at the same time a communicative professional who also knows how to use the internet keyboard,” Valerie Weber, WDR program director NRW, knowledge and culture, stated in a press release. “With his personality and an unusually wide repertoire from Bach to contemporary music, he already convinced us in the first year that we would like to bind him to North Rhine-Westphalia and our orchestra for longer. ”

Măcelaru was recently named the new music director of the Orchestre National de France starting in September 2021.

He has performed with such organizations as the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Orchester National de France, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
