Counter codex will present the world premiere of its new multimedia production “Ariadne in America” on Oct. 10 – 11, 2025, in New York City.
The production will star countertenor Jordan Rutter-Covatto as Ari, inspired by the mythic Ariadne, alongside actor Marty Keiser as Ted, a character drawn from Theseus. They will be joined by pianist David Sytkowski. The staging is directed by Kevin Newbury.
The work unfolds in two parts, including a newly created short film, directed by Newbury and filmed by Ian Chen. It introduces Ted, an ambitious podcaster on the verge of success, and Ari, a non-binary writer and estranged child of a powerful media mogul. As the two fall in love, they plot to dismantle the corporation controlled by Ari’s father.
Following the film, audiences will experience live staged performances of Haydn’s “Arianna a Naxos” and Dominick Argento’s “From the Diary of Virginia Woolf.”
“We believe that representing inherited and new works alongside each other underscores how the human condition transcends individual generations,” said Rutter-Covatto, founder and artistic director of Counter Codex, in an official press release. “Commissioning members of our community is one of the most direct ways to participate in that exploration.
“Now more than ever, we believe in the importance of making art that is bold, innovative, and challenging. It’s our hope that this contemporary setting of the Ariadne myth will not only show the continued relevance of the source material, but also affirm the fundamental humanity that trans and non-binary people share with everyone—especially at a time when that humanity is challenged in American society.”
