Copenhagen Opera Festival Announces New Artistic Director
By David SalazarThe Copenhagen Opera Festival has appointed Louise Beck as its next Artistic Director, effective Sept. 1, 2026.
Trained as a set designer and stage director, Beck, who assumes responsibility for the festival’s artistic direction for a four-year term, currently leads OPE-N (formerly OperaNord), an opera platform dedicated to expanding the genre’s contemporary reach. Beck has collaborated extensively with major institutions including the Royal Danish Opera, the Danish National Opera, and the Gothenburg Opera, and has held academic appointments at the Danish National School of Performing Arts and Ernst Busch School of Acting.
Her solo work “LOL – Laughing Out Lonely” recently toured Canada and the United States, with upcoming dates at Malmö Opera and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
“Over the years, I have followed Copenhagen Opera Festival’s great effort to make opera more accessible and enchant an entire city with the stardust of the art form. Opera is an all-encompassing and wild art form
that can embrace and move all of us—and the festival has recognized this perfectly. Today, it is an indispensable platform in Denmark where tradition and innovation, opera enthusiasts and a completely new audience meet. I look forward to strengthening and expanding this dynamic platform,” Beck said per an official press release.
The Danish opera creator and director takes over for Amy Lane, who departs after six seasons at the helm of the annual festival.
Copenhagen Opera Festival 2026 runs August 13–23 across the Danish capital, drawing between 20,000 and 30,000 attendees annually.
