Maestro Zubin Mehta was taken to hospital after he felt sick during a rehearsal of Strauss’ “Salome” on Feb. 13.

The first medical check-ups were performed, and Italian doctors believe that Maestro Mehta suffers from accumulated stress due to the numerous work commitments.

Mehta, who suffered from a kidney tumor in recent years and has since recovered, will remain under observation in the hospital until Monday, Feb. 15. The conductor was told to rest, and Teatro alla Scala hopes that on Feb. 15, after two days of rest, the conductor will be able to return to the podium to resume normal conducting activity.

Otherwise, the Teatro alla Scala’s Music Director Riccardo Chailly will take over the performance.

The performance of Strauss’ “Salome” will star Elena Stikhina in the title role, Wolfgang Koch, Gerhard Siegel, and Linda Watson, and is set to be streamed on Feb. 20, 2021.
