Australian Brett Dean has tested positive for COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus.

The composer, who was set to perform with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for a concert at the Adelaide Festival on Saturday night, has withdrawn from the event.

His agency Intermusica announced the news in a statement, “Intermusica can confirm that Brett Dean has been diagnosed with COVID-19, as of March 5. Brett is currently receiving treatment in hospital in Adelaide. Intermusica, along with Brett’s publishers Boosey and Hawkes, have taken the necessary steps to inform all those who have worked with Brett in the last 14 days, further to NHS advice and SA Health. Our thoughts are with Brett at this difficult time and we wish him well in his recovery.”

“The health and safety of the public, our artists and our staff are of paramount importance to the Adelaide Festival and we are following the advice provided to us by SA Health and instituting appropriate measures meticulously,” noted Executive Director of Adelaide Festival Rob Brookman. “We are obviously very concerned for the health of Brett who is receiving the best of care, and we hope that he has a swift and full recovery.”

Dean was set to conduct a program entitled “The Sound of History” on March 7, 2020, which will proceed as scheduled with Richard Mills stepping in.

Dean is still scheduled to perform concerts in Dresden. No word on whether he will perform these concerts.

Dean is a well-known conductor who composed “Hamlet,” which premiered at the Glyndebourne Festival. The opera is set to make its Metropolitan Opera debut in a future season.
