Church of the Village to Present ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’

Pietro Mascagni’s one-act opera “Cavalleria Rusticana” will be presented on April 29, 2023, at the Church of the Village, 201 West 13th Street, on the corner of Seventh Avenue in Manhattan.

The opera, which kicks off at 3 p.m. local time, will have a luxury cast featuring tenor Nicholas Simpson, baritone Adam Unger, and soprano Meryl Sher. They will be joined by pianist William Hicks.

Sher will play Santuzza in the opera. She is a dramatic soprano, with a wide-ranging voice of dramatic versatility and intensity. After studying at Oberlin College, she had her musical training at The Juilliard School of Music. In addition to her wide-ranging operatic work across numerous stages, she has also been an active participant in operas that have social works as their purpose, especially for children. Meanwhile, Simpson, who will interpret Turridu, is a tenor with a “brilliantly projecting, full-bodied voice.”.

Pianist William Hicks has performed on television and radio recitals and has collaborated on performances by many of the greatest singers of all time including Luciano Pavarotti, Licia Albanese, Franco Corelli, Roberta Peters and many more. He has been Associate Conductor for the Santa Fe Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, Cincinnati Opera, and New York City Opera, among others.
