Theater Magdeburg has announced Christian Øland as its new General Music Director beginning during the 25-26 season.
The conductor was selected by a committee and his contract will begin on August 28, 2025. He will introduce himself to opera audiences as General Music Director at the opera premiere on May 2, 2026.
In a statement, Øland said, “I’m really excited to begin this new chapter and collaboration with Theater Magdeburg and the Magdeburgischen Philharmonie. Since I guested the theater for the first time in 2019, I have always felt very welcomed by the audience, the orchestra, and the entire ‘theater-family’ in Magdeburg. I’m safe to say: I can’t wait to get started!”
General Director Julien Chavaz added, “After intensive auditions, discussions and consultations, the selection committee, with the involvement of the orchestra board, has decided in favour of the up-and-coming Danish conductor Christian Øland. His artistic clarity, communicative strength, and inspiring vision for the future of the Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the music theatre in Magdeburg have convinced us. Christian Øland will give new impetus to the orchestra and the ensemble of the music theatre division, develop a strong collaborative dynamic and contribute to the further development of the theatre with great enthusiasm.“
Øland is one of the Nordic region’s most promising young conducting talents and will hold the position of Chief Conductor of the Danish Philharmonic Orchestra during the 2025-26 season. He has also conducted with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and Copenhagen Philharmonic.
