Charles Dutoit has tested positive for COVID-19.

The conductor, who was set to perform with the New Japan Philharmonic, wrote a letter to the orchestra noting, “I was looking forward to seeing you in Japan, but the test for the new coronavirus infection was positive. Since I had been vaccinated, my symptoms were suppressed, but after an examination at a medical institution, my doctor instructed me to stop traveling within the year.”

He added, “I have already completed two vaccinations and have paid the utmost attention to infection control measures, so this time I feel once again how threatening this virus is to us. It was an opportunity.” The conductor noted that he will conduct with the New Japan Philharmonic in June next year.

Dutoit was set to perform on Nov. 27 and 29, 2021, and will be replaced by Michiyoshi Inoue.
