Charles Castronovo Cancels Opening Performance of Munich’s ‘Un Ballo in Maschera’
By Francisco SalazarThe Bayerische Staatsoper has announced a cast change for its production of “Un Ballo in Maschera.”
The company said that Giorgio Berrugi will sing the role of Riccardo replacing an ill Charles Castronovo.
For his part, Castronovo said, “Hi everyone, well I’m really sorry to say that I will not be able to sing the first performance of ‘un ballo in maschera’ Bayerische Staatsoper this Sunday, January 26.! After a very long and exciting run of 10 performances in Zurich of ‘Ballo’ I guess I finally caught a bug and I’m out of it for the moment. Both my doctor in Munich and my instinct tell me I still need a few days until I’m well enough to start again and sing this very demanding opera! I am slowly feeling better and hope to be in shape for the 2nd performance on the 29th but let’s see.. better to be safe! When I thought about it, I realized I haven’t cancelled even one performance in what I think has been around 10 years! Wishing all the best to the cast and crew, especially Nicole Car for her role debut as Amelia and my buddy Ludovic Tezier jumping in last minute for Renato! Also to my colleague Giorgio Berrugi who is jumping in for me! Grazie! Toi toi toi to everyone and hope to be back in form as soon as possible! Also thanks to everyone at the Bayerische Staatsoper for always being so supportive and Andrea Battistoni for always positive energy and support!”
Castronovo is set to return to the production on Jan. 29, 2025. “Un ballo in Maschera” runs through Feb. 8, 2025.
