Chants Libres to Offer Sneak Peak into Upcoming Work with ‘Prelude to the Opera’

By Logan Martell

Running from January 21 – 24, Chants Libres will offer audiences an inside-look into the creation process in the company’s short film “Prelude to the opera.”

Filmed in Monument-National, this film follows the company as it puts together its upcoming opera “L’orangeraie,” which was postponed to October of 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic.

The cast features actor Sebastien Ricard; baritones Geoffrey Salvas and Dion Mazerolle; soprano Stephanie Lessard; mezzo Stephanie Pothier; counter-tenor Nicholas Burns; and tenors Jacques Arsenault and Arthur Tangay-Labrosse. The music and libretto are by Zad Moultaka and Larry Tremblay, with stage direction by Pauline Vaillancourt and Manuel A. Codina, and music direction by Lorraine Vaillancourt.

“Chants Libre offers the public to discover the essence of an operatic creation,” stated Pauline Vaillancourt, artistic director of the company, in a press release. “We hope that the listeners will be able to sense how it feels for the vocal milieu to be deprived of its voice, while also giving them a foretaste of our next opera.”
