Central City Opera & Opera Colorado Team Up for ‘Earth to Kenzie’
By David SalazarCentral City Opera and Opera Colorado have announced a co-production of “Earth to Kenzie” this fall.
The children’s opera by composer Frances Pollock and librettist Jessica Murphy Moo follows Kenzie, a fifth grader living in a family shelter, as she navigates daily life alongside her video game avatar Edwin. Originally co-commissioned by Lyric Opera of Chicago and Seattle Opera, the production is designed for grades 3-6 and features four professional singers accompanied by piano.
The co-production marks the first major collaboration between the two largest opera companies in Colorado. The companies recently collaborated on the “Pirates of Penzance” and an arias concert.
“This collaboration is an exciting moment in the history of our two companies,” said Adam Scurto, Managing Director of External Affairs at Central City Opera, per an official press release. “By combining our resources and creativity, we’ll be connecting more students and community members to opera than either company could on its own.”
Diane Machin directs the production, with scenic design by Matthew Crane and costume design by Sarah Zinn.
