Cecilia Bartoli, Piotr Beczala, Ildar Abdrazakov, Maria Agresta & Rolando Villazón Headline Salzburg Whitsun Festival 2022 Season

The Salzburg Whitsun Festival has announced its 2022 slate, focusing on the Spanish city of Seville. “There are said to be 153 operas set in and around Seville. It is a city which unites a unique mixture of proud ancient cultures which has generated and inspired incredibly varied music and enchants visitors with its stunningly bright light, its blistering heat, its intoxicating orange blossom scent,” the Festival Press Release noted.

For the purpose of this article, we will focus on the vocal works only. The festival opens on June 3 and runs through June 6, 2022.

Rossini’s popular opera “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” will be performed in a production by Rolando Villazón and will star Edgardo Rocha in the role of Count Almaviva, Cecilia Bartoli as Rosina, Alessandro Corbelli as Bartolo, Ildar Abdrazakov in the role of Basilio, José Coca Loza as Fiorello, Arturo Brachetti as Arturo, and Nicola Alaimo in the title role. Gianluca Capuano conducts Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco.

Performance Dates: June 3 – 5, 2022

The Concert “La Torre del Oro” features Céline Scheen, Luciana Mancini, and Vincenzo Capezzuto alongside Christina Pluhar and L’Arpeggiata.

Performance Date: June 4, 2022

The Concert “El siglo de oro” will showcase Alessandro Giangrande, David Sagastume, Gabriel Díaz, Lluís Vilamajó, Víctor Sordo, Furio Zanasi, Pieter Stas, and Javier Jiménez-Cuevas. Jordi Savall conducts.

Performance Date: June 6, 2022, 11:00 a.m. CET

The festival ends with a gala concert starring Maria Agresta, Rebeca Olvera, Cecilia Bartoli, Piotr Beczala, Plácido Domingo, John Osborn, Rolando Villazón, Ildar Abdrazakov, and María Pagés. Gianluca Capuano conducts Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco.
