Cathedral of Saint John the Divine to Present ‘Sacred Drumming and Chants for 7 Black Madonnas from Southern Italy

The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine will celebrate Mother’s Day and the Month of Mary with “Sacred Drumming and Chants for 7 Black Madonnas from Southern Italy.”

The showcase, scheduled for May 11, 2023 will feature percussionist and vocalist Alessandra Belloni and John La Barbera, as well as the I Giullari di Piazza ensemble in the company of a cast of singers, vocalists, musicians and dancers,

The concert based on the book “Healing Journeys with the Black Madonna” by Alessandra Belloni, known in Italy as “The Seven Sisters.” The concert’s music includes original compositions by Belloni dedicated to the Earth Goddess, the Yorba African Orishas, Ochun, Yemenja, the Black Madonna of the Gypsies from France and Mary Magdalen.

In a review of her work, Drum Magazine noted that “Italian-born virtuoso Alessandra Belloni is established as a unique phenomenon, not just a percussionist, but also an actress, lecturer, entertainer, and healer.”
