Cast Change: Thomas Hampson & Pavel Černoch Withdraw from Boston Symphony & Boston Lyric Opera’s ‘Vanessa’
By Francisco SalazarThomas Hampson and Pavel Černoch have withdrawn from performances of Samuel Barber’s “Vanessa” presented by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Lyric Opera.
As a result, Hampson will be replaced by Patrick Carfizzi. Hampson also took to social media and said, “It is with profound frustration, depression, that I must cancel my week in Boston singing Barber’s ‘Vanessa’ due to laryngitis. You can’t rush a virus and this one is sitting in my throat making me totally incapable of representing myself. ”
He added, “There’s no one more sorry about this than I am. Thank you to the Boston Symphony, Boston Lyric Opera, my colleagues, and our audience for understanding, and thank you to my dear colleague Patrick Carfizzi for stepping in on my behalf. I wish all of my colleagues the best of luck for these two performances on Thursday and Saturday. They are surely not to be missed!”
Meanwhile, Černoch will be replaced by Ganson Salmon.
The two will join a cast that includes Jennifer Holloway, Samantha Hankey, and Anne Sofie von Otter. Andris Nelsons will conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
“Vanessa” will be performed on Jan. 8 and 10, 2026.
