By David Salazar

Australian multi-arts center CarriageWorks has announced its 2019 season, which will feature a wide range of artistic endeavors, including some performances by opera companies.

First up on the slate will be “A Drone Opera” with music by Susan Frykberg and produced by Kate Richards. The work is structured around the myth of Icarus and features opera singers, laser set-design, and drones with live video feeds. The original libretto is by Matthew Sleeth and will feature sections of Ovid’s “The Fall of Icarus” throughout as the main narrative device.

Performance Dates: Jun. 20- July 28, 2019

“Oscar and Lucinda” is next up and will be presented as a co-production and co-commission of the Sydney Chamber Opera, Opera Queensland, and Victorian Opera. The work is composed by Elliott Gyger and written by Pierce Wilcox. The work will be directed by Patrick Nolan and “eimagines the love story between the orphaned proto-feminist industrialist and the man who believes he is touched by God.”

Performance Dates: July 27 – August 31, 2019

Finally, the Sydney Chamber Opera will present a masterclass led by Artistic Director Jack Symonds and other Artistic Associates of the Sydney Chamber Opera.

Performance Dates: Oct. 5, 6, 2019
