Carnegie Hall & NYC Department of Education Revive All-City High School Music Showcase on Main Stage
By David SalazarCarnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute and the New York City Department of Education will present the “NYC All-City High School Music Program End-of-Year Showcase” on May 10 at 1 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage.
This marks the first time the event has been held at Carnegie Hall since 1990.
Originally presented by the Hall throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the showcase brings more than 300 New York City high school students to the landmark main stage for culminating performances before friends and family. Six ensembles will perform including the All-City Chorus, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Latin Ensemble, Marching Band, and Orchestra.
Saxophonist Vincent Herring joins as featured guest soloist with the Latin Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble, following workshops and masterclasses with both groups.
The program features works by Beethoven, Mozart, Duke Ellington, and Britney Spears, among others. The All-City Concert Band will also offer the world premiere of a new work by Kelijah Dunton, an All-City alumnus commissioned by the NYC Department of Education.
Established in 1936, the All-City High School Music Program provides New York City students the opportunity to develop their artistry alongside peers under the guidance of NYC Public Schools music teachers and professional musicians from the city’s leading arts organizations.
