CAP UCLA Announces ‘Far Away, Here’ Initiative
By David SalazarThe Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA (CAP UCLA) has announced the launch of “Far Away, Here,” a new multi-year international opera initiative that will debut during the 2026-27 season.
According to CAP UCLA, “Far Away, Here” will focus on presenting U.S. premieres of contemporary opera works by creators from Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The initiative will open with the U.S. premiere of Kafka’s “Letter to His Father,” an opera by Czech composer Jiří Trtík and librettist Jan Škrob. The production will be presented at the UCLA Nimoy Theater from Nov. 12-14, 2026. The project is curated and produced by Grammy-nominated tenor TIMUR (Timur Bekbosunov) in collaboration with CAP UCLA Executive and Artistic Director Edgar Miramontes.
The Los Angeles adaptation will be conducted by Fahad Siadat and directed by Shayna Penn. Bekbosunov will reprise the title role opposite Molly Pease as Mother and a collective ensemble of performers portraying Father.
“At CAP UCLA, we believe it is our responsibility as a performing arts center to welcome a multiplicity of voices and genres to our stages, and to encourage a curious, open-minded global dialogue that brings people together in meaningful ways,” Miramontes said, per an official statement. “Far Away, Here reflects that intention — an invitation to engage with new ideas and new perspectives that resonate across cultures, while also being uniquely L.A.”
Beyond the performances, CAP UCLA stated that each “Far Away, Here” presentation will include artist talks, post-performance discussions, workshops, and community events developed in partnership with Los Angeles arts organizations.
