Canadian Opera Company to Present World Premiere of ‘Fantasma’

By Francisco Salazar

The Canadian Opera Company reopens the doors to the recently renovated Canadian Opera Company Theatre with “Fantasma,” a new work by composer former COC Composer-in-Residence Ian Cusson and playwright Colleen Murphy.

The world premiere opera follows best friends Léa and Ivy, as they stumble upon a dark secret when visiting a boisterous, old-fashioned carnival.

The opera will feature a number of current Ensemble Studio artists cast in leading roles, and explores the universal themes of death, violence, compassion, and having the courage to insist on being heard.

The company will hold four performances on March 9, 10, & 12 2022.

Following “Fantasma,” the company will present “The Queen in Me” this June at the Canadian Opera Company Theatre. The organization also has productions of “La Traviata” and “The Magic Flute” programmed for the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
