Canadian Opera Company to Celebrate Asian Heritage Month
By David SalazarCanadian Opera Company has announced that it will honor Asian Heritage Month throughout the month of May.
The company will present the “Showcase Series,” which features curated performances that explore Toronto’s cultural landscape. The Asian Heritage Month slate will feature a wide range of performances at the Four Seasons Centre for Performing Arts and Bradshaw Amphitheatre.
“The Showcase Series aims to improve representation and inclusivity within opera in more authentic ways,” said Makenzie Morgan, Director of Community Partnerships & Programs in an official press statement. “Through this series, we are looking to explore and build new relationships with artists across the city and champion culturally responsive programming opportunities.”
For opera lovers, the company will showcase an event in which community members share their experiences of their Asian identity in relationship to music and opera. There will also be performances of song selections. This event is slated for May 19, 2022.
A few days later, on May 26, 2022, composer Tracy Wong will present audiences with Malaysian Folk Songs as presented by the Hamilton Children’s Choir.
Filling out the trio of vocal output is a showcase featuring sopranos Zi Xin Emily Lapin and Maeve Palmer. They will collaborated with pianist Jiliang Zhu who will present art songs based on classical Chinese poetry. That event is slated for May 31, 2022.
Among the other artists that will be showcase are choreographer Naishi Wang, calligraphy Master Man Kuen Wong, and taiko drumming ensemble Nagata Shachu.
