Byre Opera Announces ‘Riders to the Sea’ & ‘Cupboard Love’ Double Bill

By David Salazar

Byre Opera, an opera company run by The University of St. Andrews, is set to present an operatic double bill of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Riders to the Sea” and Madeleine Dring’s “Cupboard Love.”

The performances are set to take place on June 18, 19, and 20 at the Biomass Plant in Guardbridge, and on June 29 and 30 at the Peace Church in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The event will present audiences with a number of unique opportunities. They will be experiencing the first operas to be performed at a biomass plant. Moreover, “Cupboard Love” will be having its European premiere.

“Byre Opera has successfully performed in theatres of varying sizes across Scotland and beyond during the first decade of our existence,” noted Director of Music at the University of St. Andrews, Michael Downes, in a press release. “This year’s double bill will be the first time that we have created a site-specific production: we hope that the experience of performing close to audiences in an unusual context will draw a new intimacy and level of detail in performance from our singers, while also encouraging new people to attend our productions.”

The production will be directed by PJ Harris and will feature such artists as Katherine Gunya, Fanny Empacher, Rachel Munro, Ross McArthur, Kristel Knudsen, Theodore Day, Caroline Taylor, and Ross McArthur.
