Bryan Hymel Cancels Metropolitan Opera ‘Rigoletto’

By Francisco Salazar

Bryan Hymel has withdrawn from upcoming performances as the Duke in Verdi’s “Rigoletto.”

The Metropolitan Opera has announced that Hymel has canceled due to personal reasons. As a result, Francesco Demuro will sing the Duke in the March 6, 9, 15, and 20 performances, while Matthew Polenzani will perform on April 26, May 1, and 4; tenor Stephen Costello will sing the May 10 performance.

Demuro is currently rehearsing a revival of “Falstaff” at the Metropolitan Opera, while Polenzani is completing a run of “Iolanta” with Sonya Yoncheva. Meanwhile Costello is performing “La Bohème” at the Dresden Semperoper.

Hymel has struggled throughout the past season canceling high profile productions in Paris. He is set to return to the Dallas Opera for a concert with Michael Fabiano and Matthew Polenzani.

The three tenors join Rosa Feola and George Gagnidze with Nicola Luisotti conducting. “Rigoletto” opens Feb. 12 with Nadine Sierra and Vittorio Grigolo opening the run.
