Brooklyn Art Song Society will Present ‘Circles VI: The February House’

By Francisco Salazar

The Brooklyn Art Song Society is set to present “Circles VI: The February House,” which will be the final installment to its Circles series.

The performance will be held on March 1, 2024 and will draw inspiration from an often overlooked sliver of history.

Amidst the backdrop of a frenetic pre-WWII New York City, an experiment in communal living occurred at a broken-down brownstone in the heart of Brooklyn Heights. Harper’s Bazaar editor George Davis conceived a bohemian haven and invited a motley crew of creatives to reside at 7 Middagh Street. Among the figures that occupied the space were Paul Bowles, Gypsy Rose Lee, Salvador Dalí, Anaïs Nin, Benjamin Britten, W.H. Auden, Peter Pears, Kurt Weill, and Lotte Lenya.

This program draws inspiration from this time and features works by Benjamin Britten and Kurt Weill. Soprano Ashley Emerson, mezzo-sopranos Abi Levis and Kristin Gornstein, tenor Dominic Armstrong, and pianists Michael Brofman, Jeremy Chan, and Mila Henry perform.
