By Nicolas Quiroga

The Brooklyn Art Song  Society is set to present the fourth concert in its 2020-21 season, entitled “Liebe,” on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021.

The showcase will place an emphasis on love songs composed by Schubert.

The first half of the concert will open with mezzo-soprano Devony Smith interpreting “Im Frühling,” “Geheimes,” Nähe des Gelibeten,” “Versunken,” and “Ganymed,” followed by soprano Amy Owens taking on “Heimliches Lieben,” “Du bist die ruh’,” “Lied der Mignon,” and “Gretchen am Spinnrade.” Both will be accompanied by Michael Brofman.

After intermission, audiences will get to hear mezzo-soprano Kate Maroney and pianist Dimitri Dover take on “Lachen und weinen,” “Der Jüngling an der Quelle,” “Erster Verlust,” Ratlose Liebe” and “Frühlingsglaube.”

Dover will then join forces with mezzo-soprano Blythe Gaissert for “Der jüngling auf dem hügel,” “Nachtviolen,” and “Sei mir gegrüßt.”

Soprano Laura Strickling and Brofman will close out the program with “Viola.”

“While nothing can replace live performance, we are really heartened by the success of the digital concert so far,” Brofman, who is also the Brooklyn Art Song Society’s Artistic Director, told OperaWire. “Besides keeping our regular audience engaged, we have reached new audiences in 20 states as well as the UK and Canada.  We’re really seeing how Schubert’s music, even though it was written 200 years ago, really speaks to this moment, with themes of loneliness and longing.  I’m really looking forward to the final two programs of our Schubert festival, as well as our inaugural New Voices Festival, which kicks off in April and features world premieres by Katherine Balch, Brad and Doug Balliett, Daron Hagen, James Kallembach, Libby Larsen and Scott Wheeler”

The show will be broadcast live starting at 7:30 p.m. EST at the  Soapbox  Gallery in  Prospect  Heights, Brooklyn.

Additionally, noted Schubert scholar James Sobaskie will give a pre-performance lecture.
