Bronx Opera to Present Humperdinck’s ‘Hansel and Gretel’

By Francisco Salazar

The Bronx Opera is set to present Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel.”

The work will be shown on Jan. 31 and Feb. 2 at the Lovinger Theater/Lehman College in The Bronx.

The work will be conducted by conductor Michael Spierman.

The opera will be sung in English

When Humperdinck composed the work he described it as a Marchenoper (fairy-tale opera) and the libretto was written by his sister, Adelheid Wette, based on the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale of the same name.

The opera has been associated with Christmas since its earliest performances, and today is still most often performed around Christmas time.
