Brick Presbyterian Church to Present Stainer’s ‘The Crucifixion’

By David Salazar

The Brick Presbyterian Church will present its 102nd annual Good Friday performance of John Stainer’s oratorio “The Crucifixion” on Friday, April 3, 2026, at 12:15 p.m. at the church’s home at 1140 Park Avenue in Manhattan.

The performance, which is part of Brick Church’s 2025–26 Worship & Arts series, will showcase tenor Sean Fallen and baritone Nathaniel Sullivan. Organist Alistair Reid joins them alongside a full chamber orchestra.

Fallen is an active opera and oratorio soloist whose recent credits include appearances at Carnegie Hall as tenor soloist in works by Boulanger, Händel, Bach, and Haydn. Meanwhile, Sullivan has garnered acclaim for his recent portrayals of Jokanaan in Heartbeat Opera’s production of “Salome” and The King in the North American premiere of George Benjamin’s “Lessons in Love and Violence” at Tanglewood. He is also a winner of the 2023 Astral Artists National Competition.

Completed in 1887, Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” sets the story of the Passion through dramatic solos, choruses, and congregational hymns, and remains one of the most beloved works in the English choral tradition. Its unaccompanied setting of “God So Loved The World” is among its most celebrated passages.

The concert is free and open to the public.
