Bilbao Opera Postpones Verdi’s ‘Alzira’

By Francisco Salazar

The Bilbao Opera has postponed its production of Verdi’s “Alzira” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Spanish company said that due to the new restrictions and rules imposed by the government, it would postpone the Verdi opera to a new season so it can close its historic Tutto Verdi cycle, which has seen the company present every Verdi Opera.

“Alzira” was scheduled to open on Nov. 21, 2020 and was set to star Hui He in the title role, Sergio Escobar, and Juan Jesús Rodríguez.

The Bilbao Opera noted that it would be working with the artists involved to find a new date. This is the sixth opera that the company has had to cancel due to the pandemic. The company has looked for ways to reschedule productions and has worked closely with the government in order to keep its audiences healthy.

The Bilbao Opera noted that if all circumstances permit, it will return in January with its planned production of “Samson et Dalila.”
