Beth Morrison Projects to Host ‘Ask a Producer’ Conversation With Beth Morrison

By David Salazar

Beth Morrison Projects will host a free online conversation with founder Beth Morrison on Thursday, July 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. ET, offering a preview of the organization’s Producer Academy program, an 8.5 week virtual intensive in creative and tour producing.

Titled “Ask a Producer: A Conversation with Beth Morrison,” the event marks the first time since 2020 that BMP has offered prospective applicants an opportunity to engage directly with Morrison outside the program itself. The conversation will explore questions such as how an idea becomes a production, how to build belief in a project before it exists, and how to build a career around the kind of work one wants to see in the world.

The Producer Academy, which recently opened its application period on July 1, runs from Sept. 28 through Nov. 23 and is designed for early career producers working in theater, opera, dance, and other multidisciplinary and boundary breaking projects. The program brings together a 30 member cohort for twice weekly sessions covering budgeting, touring, project pitching, and the broader creative and production process. Faculty for the program includes Morrison alongside members of BMP’s creative producing, administrative, and production teams, as well as guest speakers from across the opera, theater, and live performance industries. The Producer Academy is directed administratively by Alexis Peart, a Chicago based producer, arts administrator, opera singer, and music educator who also serves as an Associate Producer at BMP.

“The Producer Academy was born in lockdown and has grown to a community of over 1,000 alumni,” said Beth Morrison, BMP President and Creative Producer, per an official press release. “It’s exhilarating to meet the new cohort each year and add to the community of artists, administrators, and early career producers that want to produce new work and tour it around the world. We aim to expose the cohort to leading industry experts to learn from and make meaningful connections with.”
