The Berlin State Opera has announced changes to its 2020-21 season.

The company stated that due to the COVID-19 crisis it will offer an alternate August and September schedule. The company announced that “in consideration of the current corona security measures, there will be a reduced seating capacity in August and September of about 370 seats in the Great Hall and about 20 seats in the Alter Orchesterprobensaal.”

The company unveiled a number of changes in its programming.

Since Mussorgsky’s “Chowanschtschina” was canceled earlier this year, performances of Verdi’s “Macbeth” will now take place on the scheduled revival dates in the 2020-21 season. The opera will be performed on Oct. 4, 9, 14, 20, and 23, 2020.

The planned revival run of Mozart’s “Idomeneo” will now be the premiere run. Performances are scheduled for Jan. 15, 20, 22, 27, and 30, 2021.

The company has also canceled the revival of Mozart’s “Così fan tutte,” and will present Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” instead. Performances will be held on Feb. 20, 28 & March 6. The cast will include Paolo Fanale, Alexey Tikhomirov, Marianne Crebassa, Ferruccio Furlanetto, and Gyula Orendt.

Finally, at the end of the season, there will be a performance of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” on July 3, 2021, with Elena Stikhina among others. Further performances will take place at the beginning of the 2021-22 season.

The theater also announced that all performances at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden until the end of July have to be canceled.
