By Francisco Salazar

The Berlin State Opera has announced that Irina Lungu will replace Valentina Nafornita in “La Bohème.”

The news comes after Nafornita withdrew from performances following the birth of her child.

Lungu will join a cast that includes Freddie De Tommaso as Rodolfo, George Petean as Marcello, Victoria Randem as Musetta, Gyula Orendt as Schaunard, and Grigory Shkarupa as Colline. The six performances will take place on Dec. 15, 17, 20, 23, 25 and 28.

Lungu made her role debut as Mimì in 2015 in Moscow and has since sung the part at the Vienna State Opera, Teatro San Carlo Naples, Teatro Regio Turin, Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Royal Opera House Muscat, and Teatro alla Scala. This season the soprano will make her role debut as Nedda in “Pagliacci” at the Teatro alla Scala and will perform Mara / Beatrice Fiorica in the contemporary double bill “La lupa / Il berretto a sonagli” by Marco Tutino at the Teatro Massimo Bellini of Catania.
