Berlin Opera Houses Release Joint Statement Related to Budget Cuts
By Francisco SalazarFollowing planned arts budget cuts in Berlin, the three major Berlin opera houses, in collaboration with ballet and theater companies, released a statement.
In the statement, the companies said, “We are dismayed by today’s cuts to the cultural budget. The Senate is taking the breath out of cultural life in the city. Berlin lives through its culture. The cuts that have now been decided upon threaten jobs, cultural diversity and the very essence of this city. Culture is not only a locational advantage, it is indispensable for cohesion and the future. It is the heart of our city.
“We call on politicians and society: Let us work together to strengthen Berlin’s culture and safeguard it for future generations. Let’s start a dialog about the upcoming budget now – so that Berlin remains a city of culture!”
Last month the government announced that it was planning €130 million in cuts. That would mean that 450 institutes that are reliant at least in part on state subsidies would be affected.
