Bella Voce Names New Managing Director

By David Salazar

Bella Voce has named Matthew Recio to the position of managing director.

Recio, who takes over for Betsy Hoats, is a vocal composer whose works include the opera “The Puppy Episode.” That work was the winner of the American Prize Award for Opera. He has also worked with such organizations as LYNX Project, Rush Hour Concert Series, Stare at the Sun, Chicago Fringe Opera, Fourth Coast Ensemble, Ear Taxi Festival, Ravinia, the Steans Institute, Art Song Chicago, Chicago Opera Theater, and WFMT.

“I am very pleased to welcome Dr. Matthew Recio as Bella Voce’s new managing director,” says David Lentz, board president.  “Matthew is a talented and prize-winning composer for choral voices. He is also an active teacher of the skills required to compose for a chorus. His compositional skills, experience, and enthusiasm, combined with his knowledge of the existing choral repertory, will match perfectly with Bella Voce’s mission and artistic vision. Matthew will help Bella Voce present wonderful choral music (old and new) to audiences throughout the Chicago area and to engage those audiences in the dialogue between historically significant choral music and the efforts and exciting new works being produced by currently active choral composers.”

Bella Voce was founded in 1983 as His Majestie’s Clerkes and has been dedicated to providing unique choral performances to live audiences in Chicago. The company was rebranded as Bella Voce in 2001.
