Bazzini’s ‘Turanda’ Gets Major Revival 150 Years Later

By David Salazar

Following its first and only performance at La Scala 150 years ago, Bazzini’s “Turanda” is getting another showcase.

The opera will be presented by Conservatory of Como in collaboration with Casa Ricordi, which has overseen a new critical edition of the score. The performances are set for Oct. 26, 2025 at Teatro Sociale di Como, and Dec. 8, 2025 at Teatro Lirico “Giorgio Gaber” in Milan.

The opera is based on Carlo Gozzi’s play that served as the inspiration for Puccini’s famed “Turandot.” The production will be conducted by Bruno Dal Bon and directed by Stefania Panighini.

The staging features the soloists, choir, and orchestra of the Conservatory of Como, composed entirely of students.

“The Turanda project represents much more than an opera revival—it is an act of cultural responsibility that rediscovers and reinterprets historical repertoire through contemporary creativity,” said Vittorio Zago, Director of the Conservatory of Como, in an official press release. “It also exemplifies the collaboration between academic and cultural institutions, reaffirming the conservatory’s role as both an engine of innovation and a guardian of musical memory.”
