Barrie Kosky, General Music Director of the Komische Oper Berlin, will stage the last operetta of the Weimar Republic, “Spring Storms.”
The work had its world premiere on January 20, 1933, exactly 10 days before Nazis seized power in Germany. Among the original cast members were Richard Tauber and a celebrated Czech actress and soprano Jarmila Novotná. However, after final curtain fell on March 12 the work fell into obscurity.
Now 87 years after that fateful day, the Komische Oper Berlin will revive Weinberger’s operetta with a cast that includes Stefan Kurt, Alma Sadé, Vera-Lotte Boecker, Dominik Köninger, Tansel Akzeybek, Luca Schaub, Arne Gottschling, Yannik Heckmann, Tino Lindenberg and Sascha Goepel.
Jordan de Souza will conduct the production by Barrie Kosky.
The revival of “Frühlingsstürme” on January 25 will be a prelude to a Jaromír Weinberger Festival that will take place at the Komische Oper Berlin between March 27 and March 30. The festival will also feature Weinberger’s opera “Schwanda, der Dudelsackpfeifer.” This work will star soprano Sara Jakubiak, baritone Daniel Schmutzhard, tenor Ladislav Elgr and mezzo-soprano Ursula Hesse von den Steinen.
“Frühlingsstürme” is set to run until June 30, for a total run of 14 shows.
